Anthony Wong Chau-sang

Move over Dennis Hopper, Anthony is here!
Does this look like the face of a depraved, maniacal, psycho killer?
Anthony Wong

You betcha !

You have to love a guy who can go from meek, abused, victim to snarling, knife/gun weilding, psychopath in the space of about 2 minutes. Wong Chau-sang is the undisputed (in my mind anyway) King of Cat. III movies. He will do anything on screen. And let me tell you, I do mean anything...Sort of acting out all those repressed violent fantasies that we all have, but are just too afraid get out there and do...

This guy could care less how "good" he looks in a film. Actually it seems like he's going for broke on the gross out value of what he's working on. I also like the totally faceless manner in which he brings life to the most revolting and grotesque characters. Bunman seemed like a real person rather than the typical slasher film 2-D killer. Kau from Heroic Trio was way over the top, but the frown he gave when they got the first of his fingers was great! Johnny Wong in Hardboiled wanted nothing more than not to lose face. Although not like the more way out characters, Det. Chiu from Armegeddon was just like watching myself on screen... I especially enjoyed the gun gag. He sort of represents all of us, where someone like Chow Yun-fat represents what most of us only dream of being. Like in Full Contact, most of my friends would be the one with their heads rolled up in the car window while dreaming of being the cool guy with the balisong. Or like in Taxi Hunter, Anthony becomes the downtrodden's fantasy. He's the next door neighbour that is so quiet and good to his mother untill you read about him flipping out with an AK 47 at the tax office...I must say that I haven't found anyone else recently who's range of work and bizarre sense of humor I have enjoyed more. No makeup too difficult, no part too degrading. He fearlessly takes on roles that would make Dennis Hopper cringe. Only Gary Oldman comes close to what Anthony will do.

I just spotted him as the Sword Saint in the new HK Big budget Fantasy, Storm Riders.

Most notorious for his portrayal of a Sweeny Todd-esque Cha sha bao merchant in Bunman, he has also played some other really disgusting parts as well... He's also quite good at the deranged Triad Boss. This is best illustrated in Hardboiled where he maintains the thin veneer of sanity but when pushed, his eyes rolled with glee as he blows up a hospital complete with patients and police! When not a Triad Boss, he's taken up being a maverick cop. Most of his delightful black humor pops out here but he does manage to inject it into almost all his work. Kau was very funny and so was Det. Chiu.

This multi-talented guy has 2 CDs out as well. For a listen go to Anthony's Underdog Rock Page. Make sure you have Realaudio installed and it would help to have a Chinese Reader as well.

I have them both and like them immensly. He has a very sexy voice.

Movie List

Anthony is a busy guy and thankfully works alot. There's a whole lot to see and more coming. I can't possibly list them all, they happen too quick!
