The American Cinematheque at the Historic Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles Presents the US Theatrical Premiere of Jackie Chan’s MIRACLES (aka MR. CANTON AND LADY ROSE) 1989, Golden Harvest/MediaAsia/TriStar (Columbia Pictures Repertory), 127 min.

Director/actor Jackie Chan’s own personal favorite of all his movies, MIRACLES has been the most difficult to see, having had only a few festival screenings in the States until now. Loosely inspired by Frank Capra’s POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES (the 1961 remake of his own LADY FOR A DAY), it’s set in a 1930’s Hong Kong that looks suspiciously like 1930’s Chicago, complete with tommy guns and fedoras. Jackie plays a naļve young country boy come to The Big City, and before you can say "bathtub gin" he’s become a full-fledged mob boss. He also gets suckered into a hare-brained scheme to fool the lovely young daughter of his "good luck charm," elderly flower-vendor Gui Ya-Lei, into thinking her mom is a member of High Society … and must pull this off despite constant interference by a rival gang and corrupt cop Richard Ng! Beautifully shot on huge, lavish Art Deco sets, this endlessly delightful action-comedy is destined to become one of your personal favorites as well. Jackie directed, co-wrote (with Edward Tang) and choreographed the action; the cast—the biggest ever of any Chan movie, including some familiar faces in gag cameos—also includes Wu Ma, Bill Tung, Lo Lieh, Billy Lau, Gloria Yip, Raymond Lui and the incomparable Anita Mui (and yes, she does get to sing). Presented in a sparkling new ‘Scope print with newly-translated subtitles and English credits—this is the first time a classic Jackie Chan movie is being released theatrically in the U.S. in its original version: no cuts, no dubbing, and no crappy new music!
